Another lovely thing about winter: blood orange season! There are many ways to use them in cooking, but I simply squeeze them for their intense purply-red juice.

Trader Joe’s sells blood oranges for $2.99 a pound; their variety is really small so you’ll need two pounds to make approximately 20 ounces of juice. Caputo’s sells larger ones, both domestic and Sicilian varieties. The Sicilian blood orange is said to be sweeter, but it’s been a few years since I’ve had them so I’m not sure if this is factual. I’m perfectly happy with the domestic ones, and the time you spend squeezing the juice is well worth the pleasure.
