What’s the word? Free rice

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is free rice for the hungry: play a vocabulary game at FreeRice.com, and for each word you define correctly, the website will donate ten grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Programme. This may not sound like much, but since the website’s inception on October 7 through last week, FreeRice.com has donated over 2.5 billion grains of rice — enough to feed 125,000 people for one day, according to the WFP.

It appears to be a legitimate fundraiser — it’s endorsed by the World Food Programme — but if you feel more comfortable donating money to established hunger charities, a couple of good ones include Action Against Hunger and America’s Second Harvest, both of which have been given “A” ratings by the American Institute of Philanthropy, a charity-watchdog organization.

Till then, enjoy the game. You’ll be able to donate at least 30 grains of rice if the website serves up toque, escarole, and degustation — vocabulary words every food enthusiast already knows, right?
