Chris Cornell look-alike Sam Mason, former pastry chef of New York’s avant-garde WD-50, hosts a web-based cooking/music show called Dinner with the Band. The episodes are filmed in Mason’s apartment where he whips up a couple of dishes, dishes with an indie band, and they perform a song or two. Thankfully, each show is divided into several parts — the cooking segments are definitely the highlight, not so much the music bits unless you’re a fan of these particular bands. Indeed, it can get pretty tedious listening to an indie rocker prattling on about texturized vegetable protein while Sam is stirring something at the stove.
That aside, Dinner with the Band is quite enjoyable — Mason’s a warm and friendly host and prepares cutting-edge recipes like miso butterscotch halibut with the same casual ease as more mundane fare like bagels and lox. I’ve been looking for a cooking show to fill my relatable-hipster-chef void (come on, we all have one) since Jamie Oliver’s left the air, and this certainly fits the bill.
Oh, and if you’re looking for the recipes, they’re not part of the actual show. It took me a few viewings to realize they’re listed under the Resources section here.
